This Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and ‘under-employed’* is based on weekly interviews covering January 2007 – May 2010 and in total 178,165 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face including 4,191 interviews in May 2010.:

In the month of May Australia’s total unemployment as measured by Roy Morgan was 803,000 (6.9%), up 43,000 (0.3%) since April, but down 22,000 since May 2009. The rise in unemployment in May has now occurred in each of the last 3 years — May 2008, up 49,000 from April 2008 and May 2009, up 26,000 from April 2009.
- In May 2010 there were 466,000 (up 18,000 on April 2010, but down 34,000 on May 2009) Australians looking for full-time work and 337,000 (up 25,000 on April 2010, and up 12,000 on May 2009) Australians looking for part-time work.
- In May 2010 there were 7,233,000 (down 11,000 on April 2010 but up 156,000 on May 2009) Australians working full-time and 3,547,000 (up 109,000 on April 2010, and up a very large 310,000 on May 2009) working part-time.
- The latest Roy Morgan May 2010 unemployment estimate is 1.5% above the 5.4% currently quoted by the ABS for April 2010.
- The Roy Morgan May 2010 ‘under-employed’* estimate is virtually unchanged at 884,000 (7.6%), down 9,000 (0.2%) on April 2010, but up 223,000 on a year ago, May 2009.
- In total in May 2010 an estimated 1,687,000 (14.6%) Australians were unemployed or ‘under-employed, up 34,000 (up 0.2%) on April 2010.

“Despite encouraging signs in recent months, Australian unemployment (803,000, up 43,000 from April 2010) and under-employment (884,000, down 9,000) in May remain a large concern. Total unemployment and under-employment in Australia — 1,687,000 is now 201,000 higher than a year ago in May 2009.
“Although overall Australian employment rose in May (10,780,000, up 98,000), the expanding workforce, (up 141,000 in May to 11,583,000), meant not enough jobs were created to ‘soak up’ the greater number of workers looking for a job.
“This problem was centred in the full-time sector of the workforce. Although the full-time workforce rose 7,000 to 7,699,000 in May, a slight fall in full-time employment (7,233,000, down 11,000) meant more Australians — 466,000 (up 18,000) sought full-time work in May than the previous month.
“The uncertainties throughout the local economy have driven down the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating — now at 116.5 (down 10.5pts since April 24/25, 2010). The drop in Consumer Confidence has resulted from both domestic (The Henry Tax Review and the proposed Mining ‘Super Profits’ Tax) and international policy (The response to the European debt crisis) issues that have also led to a slump in the Australian dollar and sharemarket — both down over 10% in the past month. These mounting challenges have halted the recent momentum in reducing Australian unemployment, which had dropped 147,000 between February and April. May unemployment remains 72,000 below its level at the turn of the year in January.
“However, as I have constantly reminded policymakers in recent years, the Australian employment situation is much broader than the simple headline unemployment number. Underemployment (884,000, down 9,000) remains stubbornly high — 223,000 higher than a year ago.
“Australia’s total underemployment and unemployment (1,687,000, up 34,000) remains over 350,000 higher than it was at the start of the Global Financial Crisis (1,319,000 for July — September 2008) and should be a key priority for the Rudd Government during an election year.”

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
