Last night the Roy Morgan PolliGraph tested electors’ responses to the Treasurer Wayne Swan and Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey as they debated economic issues at the Press Club in Canberra.

Approximately 200 electors across Australia including Labor, Coalition, Green and Other voters, younger and older voters, and men and women, responded as they watched and listened to the arguments put forward by both men, including their closing speeches.

The chart below shows how Labor voters (the red line) and Coalition voters (blue line) responded.

When asked who they considered won the debate — not surprisingly Labor voters considered Wayne Swan the winner (83% vs 17% Joe Hockey), while Coalition voters gave it to Joe Hockey (86% vs 14% Wayne Swan).

However, on the crucial measure of persuasion — Joe Hockey came up trumps — managing to switch non-Coalition voters to the Coalition, achieving a net gain of 4% including some initially Labor voters.

Michele Levine says:

“It must be noted that this does not translate into a 4% swing nationally — nothing like it.  Not everyone saw the debate and changes like this as a result of one activity do not necessarily last.

“However, there is no doubt Joe Hockey managed to ‘persuade’.”
