In late May Consumer Confidence plunged to 112.7pts (down 2.9pts in a week) according to the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating conducted last weekend — May 28/29, 2011. Consumer Confidence is now 3.8pts lower than a year ago, May 29/30, 2010 (116.5).
The fall in confidence was mainly caused by less confidence in Australia’s economic situation over the next five years and in the purchase of major household items.
A lesser majority of Australians 57% (down 4%) say ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items compared to 18% (up 2%) that say now is a ‘bad time to buy.’
In terms of Australia’s economy over the next five years 34% (down 4% — and the lowest since March 21/22, 2009) of Australians expect Australia to have ‘good times’ economically over the next five years compared to 20% (up 2%) that expect ‘bad times’ economically.
About Australia’s economy over the next twelve months, 36% (up 2%) expect Australia will have ‘good times’ financially during the next twelve months compared to 30% (up 2%) that say we’ll have ‘bad times.’
In terms of personal finances 29% (up 2%) of Australians say their family is ‘better off financially’ than a year ago compared to 35% (up 1%) that say their family is ‘worse off financially’ than a year ago.
Now 34% (down 2%) of Australians expect their family to be ‘better off financially’ this time next year compared to 24% (up 2% — and the highest since January 24/25, 2009) that expect to be ‘worse off financially.’
Gary Morgan says:
“Continued media discussion about cost of living pressures, the potential impact of the carbon tax on Australian households and also ongoing talk about RBA interest rate rises to come later this year appears to be having an impact on weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence — down 2.9pts to 112.7 — its lowest in nearly two years since June 13/14, 2009.
“Driving the fall are drops in Australians saying ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items (57%, down 4%) and expectations for the Australian economy over the next five years with 34% (down 4%) expecting ‘good times’ for the Australian economy over the longer period. Also driving the fall are rising worries about personal financial situations over the next year with 24% (up 2%) of Australians saying they expect to be ‘worse off financially’ this time next year — the highest this indicator has been since January 24/25, 2009 in the middle of the Global Financial Crisis.
“The fall in Consumer Confidence to two year lows makes it imperative that the RBA stops talking about possible interest rate rises to come and pays closer attention to the broader state of the Australian economy.”
This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is based on 1,067 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of May 28/29, 2011.

Margin of Error
The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
