This Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and ‘underemployed’* is based on weekly interviews covering January 2007 – February 2011 and in total 215,656 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face including 4,195 interviews in February 2011.:

- In February 2011 Australia’s total unemployment as measured by Roy Morgan was 927,000 (7.9%), down 21,000 (% unchanged) from January 2011, but up 20,000 (% unchanged) since February 2010.
- The Roy Morgan February 2011 ‘underemployed’* estimate has dropped substantially to 669,000 (5.7%), down 201,000 (1.5%) and is down 47,000 (0.6%) since February 2010. This is the lowest number of underemployed in Australia for nearly two years, since May 2009 (669,000).
- In total in February 2011 an estimated 1,596,000 (13.6%) of Australians were unemployed or ‘underemployed,’ down 222,000 (1.5%) on January 2011.
- Overall full-time employment in Australia for February is 7,468,000 (down 107,000 since January 2011 but up 230,000 since February 2010) and part-time employment 3,302,000 (down 221,000 since January 2011 and down 8,000 since February 2010).
- There are now 524,000 (up 65,000 on January 2011 but down 9,000 on February 2010) Australians looking for full-time work. An additional 403,000 Australians are looking for part-time work, (down 86,000 on January 2011, but up 29,000 on February 2010).
- The latest Roy Morgan unemployment estimate is 2.9% above the 5.0% currently quoted by the ABS for January 2011.

# The Gillard Government’s ‘Fair Work Australia’ Act was implemented on January 1, 2010,
replacing the Howard Government’s ‘Work Choices’ Legislation.
Gary Morgan says:
“The February 2011Roy Morgan employment estimates show a fall in the workforce (11,697,000, down 349,000) in February — which Roy Morgan has been measured in most years as students return to their education after the Summer holidays — has driven a drop in numbers across the board.
“Employment has fallen 328,000 to 10,770,000, full-time employment is down 107,000 to 7,468,000 and part-time employment is down 221,000 to 3,302,000. Unemployment has also fallen 21,000 to 927,000, although remains steady at 7.9% of the workforce.
“The most substantial fall is in the ranks of the underemployed down 201,000 to 669,000 (5.7%) — the lowest number of underemployed since May 2009 (661,000). Looking closely at previous February results shows the underemployed have fallen in each February since Roy Morgan began measuring underemployment on a monthly basis. This is also likely due to students returning to their education and being unable to work the full-time hours they were available for throughout Summer."

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
