GILLARD’S STILL SEEN AS ‘BETTER PRIME MINISTER’ BUT PREFERENCE FALLS 7% TO 45% COMPARED TO ABBOTT 41% (UP 6%). PM GILLARD’S JOB DISAPPROVAL AT NEW HIGH OF 54% (UP 7%)

Finding No. 4737 - This special telephone Morgan Poll was conducted over the two nights of January 17/18, 2012, with an Australia-wide cross section of 540 electors.: January 20, 2012

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has lost ground as preferred Prime Minister (45%, down 7% since March 2011) over Opposition Leader Tony Abbott (41%, up 6%) according to a special telephone Morgan Poll conducted over two nights this week (January 17/18, 2012).

When compared to other prominent Liberal Party potential leaders, former Liberal Party Leader Malcolm Turnbull (53%, up 10% since March 16/17, 2011) is preferred to Prime Minister Gillard (35%, down 9%); Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey (49%) is also preferred to Gillard (41%); however Gillard (48%) is clearly preferred to Shadow Finance Minister Andrew Robb (29%).

Job Performance — Approve/Disapprove

A majority of electors disapprove of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s handling of her job (54%, up 7%) while only 34% (down 6%) approve.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott also fares poorly with 56% (up 2%) disapproving of his handling of the job as Opposition Leader compared to only 36% (down 1%) that approve.

Gary Morgan says:

“This special telephone Morgan Poll shows a large fall in support for Prime Minister Julia Gillard (45, down 7%) as ‘Better Prime Minister’ substantially cutting into her lead over Opposition Leader Tony Abbott (41%, up 6%) since March 2011.

“When compared to alternative Liberal Leaders Malcolm Turnbull & Joe Hockey, Gillard fares even worse with Turnbull (53%, up 10% since March 2011) now well ahead of Gillard (35%, down 9%) as ‘Better Prime Minister’ while Hockey (49%) cf. Gillard (41%) also has a clear lead. However, Gillard is clearly preferred to Shadow Finance Minister Andrew Robb — Gillard (48%) cf. Robb (29%).

“Most worryingly for Gillard is that a record high 54% (up 7% since March 2011) of electors disapprove of Gillard’s handling of the job as Prime Minister compared to only 34% (down 6%) that approve — also a record low since she became Prime Minister. However, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is not doing any better with electors as 56% (up 2%) disapprove of Abbott’s handling of the job as Opposition Leader compared to only 36% (down 1%) that approve.

“Clearly the results of today’s special telephone Morgan Poll show that Australian electors aren’t impressed by either leader, and that alternative leaders are held in a higher regard. Another Morgan Poll released today shows that former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (33%, up 2%) is clearly preferred as ALP Leader to Gillard (19%, down 5%) while former Liberal Party Leader Malcolm Turnbull (37%, down 1%) is also significantly preferred to Abbott (22%, down 2%).”

This special telephone Morgan Poll was conducted over the two nights of January 17/18, 2012, with an Australia-wide cross section of 540 electors.

Margin of Error

The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample.
