Security - Melbourne residents want action

Article No. 353 - November 15, 2004

Gary Morgan

Lord Mayor Candidate

Margaret Wood

Deputy Lord Mayor Candidate

Gary Morgan has confidently identified ‘Security’ and dealing with Melbourne ’s social problems as his highest priorities upon being elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne .

“My telephone calling to voters has proven that residents are concerned with a range of security and social issues, in particular:

•  lighting in laneways and public spaces, including parks
•  drug trafficking — many residents remain concerned at various CBD hotspots as well as the relocation into our parks and other suburban locations   in Carlton , Kensington and Southbank

“Of particular concern is the number of syringes being discovered around the historic boat shed precinct by the Yarra.

•  alcoholism on the streets and begging remain concerns
•  homelessness also needs special priority.

“In these days when Governments can find millions of dollars to relocate bats, they seem unable to house and relocate the street people.

“We must do better,” Mr Morgan said.

“In the first week following my election, I will seek a meeting with the Police Commissioner to ensure greater cooperation with the police and an increased police presence. Council by laws need to change to address this important issue.

“These are problems for which we must follow the lead of former New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani in having a zero tolerance of drugs and crime and a compassionate broad approach to our homeless.

“I also want to understand the deal with the under lying problems which causes beggars to infiltrate the streets.”

Gary Morgan is running for Lord Mayor in the coming Melbourne City Council elections, along with Margaret Wood, Deputy Lord Mayor Candidate. Councillor Candidates Peter Clarke and Emily Tang make up the Melbourne Civic Group ticket.
