'No Tolerance' Doesn't Mean 'No Help'

Article No. 355 - November 17, 2004

Gary Morgan

Lord Mayor Candidate

Margaret Wood

Deputy Lord Mayor Candidate

Lord Mayor Candidate and local businessman Gary Morgan today pledged his own Mayoral salary to help the City’s underprivileged.

“If elected, I will donate my four years of salary — of more than half a million dollars including add on costs — to the Lord Mayor’s Fund,” Mr Morgan said.

“I envisage that, together with organisations such as the Lighthouse Foundation, Open Family Australia and the Salvation Army, the Fund’s primary focus would be to help the beggars, street kids and drug users to get off the street and into situations where they can help themselves.

“We need to help them help themselves, not ignore them - as seems to be happening now.”

“We want to be able to rid not only the Melbourne CBD, but the whole of Melbourne of beggars and drug users and dealers.

“Many Melbourne people have told me they are often concerned about their safety and they should be able to walk around the City without being approached.”

Mr Morgan said he would also limit the use of the Mayoral limousine, with the further savings also going to the Lord Mayor’s Fund.

“I will lead the people of Melbourne by example, and continue to walk to work. As well as cutting down on unnecessary expenses, I will be doing my bit to cut down unnecessary traffic congestion in the City centre.”

Gary Morgan is running for Lord Mayor in the coming Melbourne City Council elections, along with Margaret Wood, Deputy Lord Mayor Candidate. Councillor Candidates Peter Clarke and Emily Tang make up the Melbourne Civic Group ticket.
