Letter to the Editor of the Herald Sun
Friday, November 19, 2004 Mr Neil Wilson Opinion Page Editor Herald Sun
Dear Mr Wilson I was surprised to read Les Twentyman's article ( Clearing streets won't rescue kids , Herald Sun 18/11/04) saying that my policy was to "lock up beggars and druggies". This is misleading and not true. My objective is to help these people to help themselves. On November 17 I released a press statement pledging my own Mayoral salary of more than half a million dollars over 4 years to The Lord Mayor’s Fund so it could be used to help the City's underprivileged.
I said The Lord Mayor’s Fund would work with organisations such as the Lighthouse Foundation, Open Family Australia and the Salvation Army in helping the beggars, street kids and drug users to get off the street and into situations where they can help themselves.
If elected, I will make sure the Melbourne City Council works with the authorities to rid not only the Melbourne CBD, but the whole of Melbourne , of beggars and drug users and dealers.
Many Melbourne people have told me they are often concerned about their safety when in the City. Everyone should be able to walk around the City without being approached.
Readers can visit www.roymorgan.com to see my press release.
Yours sincerely,
Gary Morgan
