Article No. 428 - November 30, 2005

Australians who support the Australian Labor Party predominantly turn to the ABC for their Current Affairs , while supporters of the Liberal-National Party Coalition choose Channel Nine. The audiences for Soap Operas are predominantly made up of ALP supporters while the audience for Garden and Travel programmes is more likely to support the Coalition. Crime and Drama shows also have a high Coalition audience. When it comes to the daily Evening News , Seven and Nine have more Coalition supporters in their audience than the general population, SBS a higher ALP audience and the ABC and Channel Ten are fairly evenly distributed between the major parties. These are the latest findings from Roy Morgan Single Source.

Current Affairs

Labor supporters are more likely to watch ABC Current Affairs programmes, The 7:30 Report , Foreign Correspondent , Four Corners , Insiders, and Lateline than Coalition supporters. The 7:30 Report has an audience made up of 41% ALP supporters (3% above average) and 36% L-NP supporters (3% below average). Foreign Correspondent ’s audience is 40% ALP (2% above average) and 34% L-NP (5% below average), while Four Corners has 41% ALP supporters in its audience (3% above average) and 33% L-NP supporters (6% below average). The Insiders and Lateline audiences are more polarised. Insiders has a 46% ALP audience (8% higher than the general population) and a 30% L-NP audience (9% below the general population). Lateline’s audience is 45% ALP (7% higher) and only 29% L-NP (a substantial 10% lower).

Channel Nine’s Current Affairs programmes: 60 Minutes , A Current Affair , Sunday and Business Sunday have an above average number of L-NP supporters in their audience. The Sunday programme has more L-NP supporters (42%, 3% above average) but an ALP viewership consistent with the general population (38%). However Business Sunday which directly precedes it, has a strongly L-NP audience with more than half the audience supporting the Coalition (51%, 12% above average). Business Sunday ’s audience is 33% ALP, (5% below the general population). A Current Affair and 60 Minutes have a higher than usual L-NP supporting audience both at 46%, (7% above the general population), ALP support in their audiences is 1% and 2% below average respectively.

SBS’s Current Affairs viewers are much more likely to be ALP supporters than L-NP supporters. Dateline ’s L-NP audience is 31% (8% below the general population) while ALP supporters make up 43% of the audience (5% higher than the general population). Insight’s audience is even less likely to support the L-NP at 29% (a substantial 10% below the general population) with ALP supporters making up 42% of the audience (4% above average).

Channel Seven’s Today Tonight has both a higher ALP audience (39%, 1% above average) and L-NP audience (44%, 5% above average) with minor party viewers switching off (10% down 5%). Channel Ten’s Meet the Press almost exactly mirrors the general population with the ALP audience 1% higher at 39% while the L-NP and minor party audiences are unchanged on the general population.

Looking at daily Evening News programmes the result is similar to Current Affairs , Channel Nine viewers are more likely to support the Coalition than the general population with 47% supporting the L-NP and less likely to support Labor (36%). Channel Seven similarly attracts more L-NP supporters with 43% of their audience supporting the Coalition, however also attracting marginally more ALP voters (1%). The ABC evening news’ audience reflects the general population pretty well with only a 1% drop in L-NP voters with all other groups represented as in the population at large. SBS’s news however is strongly skewed away from the L-NP with only 31% of its audience supporting the Coalition (8% lower than the population average) and 42% supporting Labor (4% higher than average). Channel Ten’s evening news has higher proportions of both ALP (40%) and L-NP (41%) voters (both 2% higher than the general population).
