Environmental concern high around the World - Australians greenest of all

Article No. 450 - January 20, 2006

In the week following the inaugural conference of the Asia-Pacific Partnership for Clean Development and Climate in Sydney (January 12) and in which environmental issues have received much public attention, the latest data from Roy Morgan International shows that Australians lead New Zealand, the UK and the US in environmental consciousness. Almost nine-out-of-ten Australians (89%) agree that ‘If we don’t act now we’ll never control our environmental problems’, 65% agree that ‘At heart I’m an environmentalist’ and 73% disagree that ‘Threats to the environment are exaggerated’. These responses were all higher than those of Americans, Britons and New Zealanders.

Whilst strong majorities in all countries surveyed agreed with the statement ‘If we don’t act now we’ll never control our environmental problems’ Americans were the least ‘Green’ with only 75% of the population agreeing. In both the UK and New Zealand, however, 85% of the population agree with the statement, only slightly less than the 89% of Australians.

Americans (57%) and Britons (58%) are less likely to say that ‘At heart I am an environmentalist’ than Australians (65%) and New Zealanders (64%). In the USA (37%) and the UK (35%) more than a third of respondents disagree with the statement whereas only 32% of New Zealanders and 30% of Australians do.

Apart from the USA where only 65% of people disagree, at least seven-out-of-ten New Zealanders (70%), Britons (71%) and Australians disagree (73%) that ‘Threats to the environment are exaggerated’.

An earlier Roy Morgan International survey of Australia’s Opinion Leaders, found that environmental issues were considered one of the most important problems facing the world and Australia. Australian Opinion Leaders considered global warming to be the main environmental problem facing the world and Australia (42%), followed by climate change (11%).

Gary Morgan Says:

“With such strong concerns voiced across Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US, Governments can afford to be brave on measures to protect our environment.

“With more than four-in-five Australians (89%), New Zealanders (85%) and Britons (85%) and 75% of Americans agreeing that ‘If we don’t act now we’ll never control our environmental problems’ our political leaders have a clear mandate to act decisively to address environmental issues.”
