The latest data from the Roy Morgan Internet Monitor highlights Google’s dominant position in the New Zealand Internet search engine market. In the last four years the number of Internet users who name Google as their main search engine almost tripled, reaching just over 2 million in the August-October 2005 Quarter compared with only 728,000 in the February-April 2002 Quarter. Three-quarters of New Zealand Internet users (75%) named Google as their main search engine a significant increase from the 34% in the April 2002 Quarter. Google has continued to strengthen its position over the last four years with the number of users and its market share increasing in every Quarter. Google’s performance is even more striking when compared to that of its four closest competitors. In the October 2005 Quarter the combined number of Internet users naming XtraMSN (369,000), Yahoo! (288,000), SearchNZ (109,000) or WebSearch (100,000) as their main search engine was less than half that of Google. The last four years have seen XtraMSN struggling to maintain its user base, during 2002 and 2003 those users naming XtraMSN as their main search engine initially grew from 491,000 (23%) in the April 2002 Quarter, to 648,000 (26%) in the October 2003 Quarter, however its position subsequently declined to its current level of 369,000 (14%) in the October 2005 Quarter. Yahoo! has also struggled, with the number of Internet users naming Yahoo! as their main search engine declining in almost every Quarter, from 512,000 (24%) in the April 2002 Quarter to only 288,000 (11%) in the October 2005 Quarter. SearchNZ and WebSearch have also shown a slight, although less marked, decline; after an initial increase from 121,000 (5%) in May-July 2002 to 140,000 (6%) in February-April 2003, SearchNZ declined to 109,000 (4%) in the October 2005 Quarter, while WebSearch declined from 112,000 (5%) in November 2003-January 2004 to 100,000 (4%) in the October 2005 Quarter.
