Global Poll: Vast Majorities Agree
We Must Act Now on Environmental Problems

Article No. 485 - May 05, 2006

Conducted for the 2006 Future Summit and published exclusively in The Australian, May 4, 2006

More than four-in-five people in Australia (88%), Britain (85%), New Zealand (85%) and Indonesia (84%) agree that if we don’t act now we’ll never control our environmental problems, data from the Roy Morgan Environmental Monitor reveals. Just over three-in-four Americans (76%) also agree with this statement, however almost one-in-five Americans (19%) disagree - 5% can’t say.

Majorities in Australia (73%), Britain (72%), New Zealand (70%), the USA (64%) and Indonesia (55%) also disagree with the statement that threats to the environment are exaggerated. However roughly a quarter of Australians (23%), Brits (23%) and New Zealanders (26%) do believe that threats to the environment are exaggerated while 30% of Americans and 37% of Indonesians believe threats are exaggerated.

Overall, environmental concerns in Australia, Britain and New Zealand are significantly higher than the USA or Indonesia which may explain the greater effort in these three countries to recycle. An overwhelming majority of Australians (86%) agree that they try to recycle everything they can with slightly smaller majorities in New Zealand (78%) and Britain (77%) also agreeing with this statement. Just under two-thirds of the American population (65%) say they try to recycle everything they can.

Indonesians are the least likely to say they recycle (56%) yet they are the most likely to say they are environmentalists at heart (80%). Two-thirds of Australians (66%), 64% of New Zealanders, 59% of Brits and 54% of Americans say that they are environmentalists at heart.

Gary Morgan says:

"Around the world concern for the environment is high: 88% of Australians, 85% of Britons and New Zealanders, 84% of Indonesians and 76% of Americans agree that If we don’t act now we’ll never control our environmental problems.”

"The fears for the environment held by Australians, Brits and New Zealanders, and to a lesser extent Americans, are clearly influencing their efforts to recycle. However while Indonesians are far less likely to recycle, 80% of them regard themselves as environmentalists —the highest of all countries surveyed.

"There are still significant minorities in all countries who believe threats to the environment are exaggerated.”

This special Roy Morgan Survey conducted for the 2006 Future Summit is based on the findings of Roy Morgan Single Source:
• 23,413 people aged 14 and over in Australia, between February 2005 and January 2006;
• 12,317 people aged 14 and over in New Zealand, between February 2005 and January 2006;
• 1,914 people aged 14 and over in the UK, between March and November 2005;
• 3,970 people aged 14 and over in the USA, between December 2004 and November 2005; and
• 24,689 people aged 14 and over in Indonesia, between January 2005 and December 2005.
