Online News Continues To Grow - Ninemsn Number One For Second Year Running

Microsoft and Publishing and Broadcasting Limited’s (PBL) online news service, ninemsn.news, is Australia’s most visited Internet news site for the second year in a row according to the Roy Morgan Internet Monitor. On average, 894,000 Australians aged 14 and over visited the ninemsn.news website in any four-week period during April 2005 to March 2006 — 159,000 more than during the previous period. The Government-owned ABC was the second most visited online news service during April 2005 to March 2006 with 826,000 visitors — 136,000 more than the previous period.

The Sydney Morning Herald — a Fairfax subsidiary — online news service, smh.com.au, was the third most visited news site despite it not exhibiting the same levels of growth as ninemsn and the ABC. During April 2005 and March 2006, on average 699,000 Australians 14 and over visited the SMH website, just 21,000 more than the previous period.

Theage.com.au, another Fairfax website, registered 599,000 visitors in any four-week period during April 2005 and March 2006. However, like the SMH, it too displayed little growth, up just 24,000 on the previous period.

The top five most visited websites during any four-week period (ninemsn.news, abc.net.au/news, smh.com.au, theage.com.au, and news.com.au) remained the same for the period April 2005 to March 2006 as they did for the period April 2004 to March 2005 — a reflection of the difficulty faced by independent news outlets and new entrants into the market when attempting to match it with Australia’s "media conglomerates."

Google News — a relatively new entrant into the market — recorded an average of 314,000 visitors (eighth overall) during any four-week period during April 2005 to March 2006. The success of the Google search engine has no doubt provided Google News with an already made clientele. It will be interesting to see whether Google build this client base during the next 12 months.

 

Crikey! was the highest ranked 'independent' online news publication with an average of 181,000 Australians having visited its website in any four-week period during April 2005 to March 2006 — up from 154,000 in the previous period (an increase of 27,000).

 

The total number of Australians who visited any of the listed news sites during a four-week period from April 2005 to March 2006 was 2.990 million, up from 2.682 million for the period April 2004 to March 2005 — an increase of 308,000 (11.5% growth).

 

These are the latest findings of the Roy Morgan Internet Monitor taken from Roy Morgan Research Single Source data, based on 29,725 Australian-wide interviews with people aged 14 years and over from April 2004 to March 2006.
