International Survey Finds That Majority Disagree With Gay Couples Being Allowed To Adopt Children

Article No. 608 - February 08, 2007

Majorities in Indonesia (78%), Australia (57%), Britain (55%), New Zealand (53%), and America (51%) disagree with the statement: “homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt children”.

New Zealanders are the most likely to agree (43%) that “homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt children” followed by Americans (42%), Australians (39%), Brits (39%), and Indonesians (17%), according to the latest Roy Morgan International survey.

When analysing those who agree that “homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt children”, women in all surveyed countries (NZ 50%; US 48%; Aust. 46%; UK 46%) are more likely than their male counterparts (NZ 36%; US 36%; Aust. 32%; UK 32%) to agree, except in Indonesia where just 17% of men and women support homosexual couples adopting children.

Similarly, in all countries except Indonesia, those who are single are more likely to agree than married or de facto respondents that “homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt children”.  The starkest difference is in Australia where 47% of single respondents agree compared to 34% or married/de facto respondents.

Another pattern to emerge from the survey was that, as a general rule, the older someone is the less likely they are to agree that “homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt children”.

Despite majorities opposing the idea of gay couples adopting children, the survey found that Indonesia is the only country in which a majority (74%) agrees that “homosexuality is immoral”.  In all other countries surveyed, less than half of the respondents agree that “homosexuality is immoral”: US 46%; Australia 33%; New Zealand 33%; and the UK 29%.
