Sir Edmund Hillary and Helen Clark are the two most admired people in New Zealand, a special Roy Morgan New Zealand survey finds. New Zealanders also include in their Top 10 people such as Nelson Mandela (4.5%), Tana Umaga (2.5%) and The Queen (2%) amongst the most admired public figures. The outpouring of grief afforded Sir Edmund after his death on January 11, 2008, bears testimony to the respect given to one of New Zealand’s most celebrated citizens. Colin Meads is still rated highly by Maori (in 6th spot overall), even though he retired as an International player in 1971. By contrast, New Zealanders of a European heritage include within their Top 10, sportspeople such as Peter Blake (2nd spot), Sarah Ulmer (4th) and Grant Dalton (6th), in addition to the Rugby players.
