NRL Support - Brisbane Broncos Still the Most Popular but Melbourne Storm Gaining Ground

Article No. 762 - June 03, 2008

The Brisbane Broncos with 1.27 million supporters are the most popular NRL team, despite losing 198,000 supporters after not appearing in the 2007 Grand Final and the formation of the Gold Coast Titans who have 207,000 supporters. They are followed by 2007 Premiers, the Melbourne Storm, with 769,000 supporters (up from 732,000 as of March 2007), according to the latest Roy Morgan Single Source data.

Wests Tigers have the third largest NRL supporter base with 489,000 (down from 513,000 as of March 2007). North Queensland Cowboys’ is fourth with 474,000 (down from 539,000 as of March 2007). The North Queensland Cowboys still has significantly higher supporter base than their 120,000 as of 2001.

South Sydney Rabbitohs increased supporters as of March 2008 by 74,000 to 321,000 (up 30.0%), following the emotion charged change to private ownership under the guidance of Peter Holmes-A’Court and Russell Crowe. This is the largest increase in support for any team in the past year.

The biggest losers on the supporter “ladder” are the Canberra Raiders now with 149,000 supporters (down 68,000 or 31.3%), the Newcastle Knights with 338,000 supporters (down 148,000 or 30.4%), the New Zealand Warriors 157,000 supporters (down 44,000 or 21.9%) and the Penrith Panthers 167,000 supporters (down 34,000 or 16.9%).

Roy Morgan Single Source data can be used to highlight some interesting characteristics of NRL supporters.  For example, when compared to all NRL supporters, Melbourne Storm supporters are 82% more likely to have watched an AFL match on TV and New Zealand Warriors supporters are 57% more likely to find TV advertising interesting. Penrith Panthers supporters are more likely to spend $100 or more accessing the internet each month at home while Brisbane Broncos supporters are 52% more likely to employ a Building Society as their main financial institution.  Further details can be found below.

These are the latest findings from the Roy Morgan Sports Monitor, part of Roy Morgan Single Source, an Australia-wide survey of about 21,061 people aged 14 years and over from April 2007 to March 2008.
