The A-League - Sydney F.C. and Melbourne Victory Have the Most Supporters

The largest support bases in the newly formed A-League are for Sydney F.C (640,000) and Melbourne Victory (638,000), according to the latest Roy Morgan Single Source data.

Across Australia, the other A-League teams have significant support with 463,000 people supporting Queensland Roar, 315,000 Perth Glory, 291,000 Adelaide United, 208,000 the Newcastle Jets and 160,000 the Central Coast Mariners.  The New Zealand based Wellington Phoenix has 32,000 supporters in Australia.

Overall, A-League supporters are split 65.3% Men and 34.7% Women - Sydney F.C., 65.4% Men and 34.6% Women, and Melbourne Victory, 69.9% Men and 30.1% Women.

In total, 1.23 million people attended 84 A-League matches in their recent (2007-2008) season - an average of 14,613 people per match, according to A-League attendances data.

Melbourne Victory attracted the highest average attendance in the home and away season with 26,068 people, followed by Queensland Roar averaging 16,966 people, Sydney F.C. 16,375 and the Newcastle Jets 13,209. Perth Glory had lowest average attendance - 7,598 people per game.

 

Gary Morgan says:

The A-League competition is in its third season, and is well supported by 2.59 million men and women. Their successful launch is now followed by expansion plans that include the addition of a new Gold Coast Club, a Women’s League and an expanded schedule of games to be played in Asia — Yes, a ‘Women’s League’!”
