Majority of Australians (62%) Intend to Participate in a Carbon Emissions Offset Scheme for their Holiday or Leisure Travel

Article No. 767 - June 13, 2008

The Environment, as an issue, has come of age. The large majority of Australians (88%) perceive a need to ‘act now’ to control environmental problems. There is also a strong identification with the environmental movement for many Australians with 67% agreeing that “At heart I’m an environmentalist.” Only a minority (25%) believe that the “threats to the environment are exaggerated.”

Whilst Australian attitudes are positive, taking action is the next step. A recent study conducted by Roy Morgan Research revealed that 62% of Australians intend to participate in a carbon emission offset scheme for their holiday/leisure travel. So far only 4% have actually participated in the past.

In addition when considering a holiday 41% claim that climate change is an important issue. At the same time air travel for leisure purposes has increased over the past five years with the introduction of low cost carriers flying domestically and overseas and the resulting increased competition, cheaper airfares and increased access.

Although a significant number of Australians (20%) report that they want an ecotourism experience and that climate change is an important issue (41%), only a small number have so far taken action with only 1% of Australians saying they “had an eco-tourism experience on their last holiday.”

Jane Ianniello, Roy Morgan Research International Director of Tourism, Travel & Leisure, says:

“There is a large opportunity at present for the Australian tourism industry to respond to this widespread interest in environmental issues by actively involving their customers in programs that reduce the carbon footprint of their business.”
