Article No. 771 - July 02, 2008

INVITATION TO VICTORIA DAY COUNCIL ADDRESS

Next Saturday, July 5, 2008, Gary Morgan will be presenting the 2008 Victoria Day Council 157th Anniversary LaTrobe Lecture in the Legislative Assembly of the Victorian Parliament House.

The lecture is titled:

"Women, Media and People from Other Countries who have made Victoria — 1851 to Today”

By Gary Morgan, Roy Morgan Research

July 5, 2008

“That the real, central theme of History is not what happened, but what people felt about it when it was happening.” G M Young*

“When the thoughts of our forefathers, common thoughts about common things, will have become thinkable once more.” Frederick Maitland*

The paper refers to Morgan Polls, first conducted in 1941 by Roy Morgan (1908-1985), and early Melbourne publications, many of which were published by the Victorian forebears of Gary Morgan, including William H. Williams (1831-1910) and Alfred Henry Massina (1834-1917).

The paper draws from the following references:

1. The First Ninety Years: The Printing House of Melbourne 1859 to 1949, by Ronald G. Campbell, published in 1952 by A. H. Massina & Co. Pty Ltd.

The book covers the history of Alfred Henry Massina's printing and publishing business starting in Victoria in 1858. In 1902 Alfred Henry Massina was the inaugural Chairman of The Herald and Weekly Times, fellow Directors were Theodore Fink and William L Baillieu, while Samuel Winter was also a Director and Managing Editor.

In 1856, Samuel Winter and Alfred Massina began their Melbourne printing "working lives" at W. H. Williams Printer, 94 Bourke Street, East Melbourne. William Henry Williams was one of Victoria's earliest printers and publishers. In 1857, William H. Williams married, Eliza Florance, daughter of Dr William Florance. They were Gary Morgan's great-grandparents.

2. Memoir of Mrs Eliza Fox: 1793 - 1820, which includes letters and journals from her husband, William Johnson Fox, MP for Oldham, edited by Franklin Fox, published in 1869.

Mrs Eliza Fox was the sister of Gary Morgan's great- great-grandfather, Dr William Florance, who married Eliza Massena. Eliza Massena was Alfred Henry Massina's first cousin. The Australian Massina family initially came from Levens, near Nice. A family member was Napoleonic Marshal Andre Massena (1st Duc de Rivoli, 1st Prince d'Essling, born May 6, 1758, died April 4, 1817).

3. Extracts from Printers and the Streets and Lanes of Melbourne: 1837 to 1975, by Don Hauser, published by The Nondescript Press, Melbourne in 2006.

4. Morgan Polls, Roy Morgan Research, 1941 to 2008.
