WPP makes Hostile Bid for TNS (Taylor Nelson Sofres) After Previous Rejections

Article No. 774 - WPP bid for TNS threatens competition in the Australian market: July 09, 2008

The world's 2nd largest advertising company - WPP - has made an unsolicited and hostile bid for Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) after TNS has rejected WPP bids repeatedly over the past few months.

Taylor Nelson Sofres has been in talks with German competitor GfK AG over a merger deal. The hostile bid from WPP, valuing Taylor Nelson at 260.7 pence - over 50% above the TNS closing price on the day before TNS announced it was in merger discussions with GfK AG, April 28, has changed the equation. The offer values TNS at an overall value of £1.08b ($A 2.24b).

If WPP succeeds in purchasing TNS, there will be no competition in Australia for the OzTam ratings which are now conducted by a WPP/ACNielsen joint venture!

The real question is: Should advertising agencies own the advertising research companies who measure their performance? Advertisers are not fully aware of the problems this will cause them in future!"
