The latest Early Indicators data from Roy Morgan suggests that the recent steep decline in new vehicle purchasing intention may have stabilised. The June data shows that the percentage of the over 18 year old population intending to purchase a new vehicle in the next 12 months rose marginally to 3.3% from the May result of 3.2%, halting a steep three month decline.

Sak Ryopponen says:

“The June result, in combination with a stabilising of the Consumer Confidence Index in July, provides reason for cautious optimism that the fall in new vehicle purchase intention may have bottomed out. Private buyers are key to a strong sales result for the Auto industry in 2008, and another record result would be difficult to achieve if private buyer confidence declined any further.

“The most successful manufacturers will be those who best understand the motivation behind buyers in each market segment, and why there is a migration, for example, from Large Cars to Small Cars and SUVs. If the manufacturers can combine that understanding with successfully executed creative policies in well targeted media, then they will have maximised the return on their research insights."
