Roy Morgan Readership estimates for Australia for the 12 months to December 2008

Article No. 845 - February 19, 2009

The 12 months to December 2008 Roy Morgan Readership release shows a range of results, with some publications up and others down, year-on-year.

Newspapers have also had mixed results against a strong period of national political and economic news in 2007.  They have performed well overall and demonstrate greater stability than reported in the overseas experience, especially in the US.

Due to new initiatives outlined below, newspaper results year-on-year should not be directly compared as there have been modifications to measurement, though any effects are minor.

NEWSPAPERS ARE TRANSFORMING, AS IS READERSHIP MEASUREMENT

Roy Morgan Research is pleased to announce that we will soon bring to market a platform of measurement which both clarifies and extends newspapers’ various audiences.

There has been dynamic change in the way newspapers have provided consumers with news and information over the last 10 years.  This includes the proliferation of specialised sections, introduction of high quality inserted magazines and online delivery of real time news via websites.

The digital era for newspapers is maturing.  Newspaper masthead-brands can be accessed both in printed form and via the internet; newspaper readership can thus be via hardcopy, online or both.

In mid-2008, Roy Morgan Research began the testing and roll-out of a modified readership question that could more precisely clarify the different components of newspaper readership.  This is in line with international trends and the need of all media to adapt to changing technology and delivery platforms.

While the current Roy Morgan Readership Survey results are generally very strong for printed copies, care should be exercised in drawing direct comparisons with previous measures of performance.  Before attributing changes in readership to consumer change, the fact that there has been a slight adjustment, due to the improvements in measurement, must be considered.

There were only minor differences observed with the new measures, so results from the new question have been rolled in to the released results (with 6 months of the new data in the December 2008 release).  However, the current results are not directly comparable with those from a year ago.

More data will be needed before the online component is released.  We anticipate that to occur around the middle of 2009.
