This Saturday, St. Kilda plays Geelong in the 2009 AFL Grand Final. Special Roy Morgan Research available on AFL Supporter Profiles on the Roy Morgan Online Store reveal that despite matching up for Australian sport’s biggest annual game — there are several sporting differences between the two sets of supporters for each of the combatants in this year’s AFL Grand Final.

Geelong supporters present a stark contrast to St. Kilda supporters when it comes to their other sporting passions. Geelong supporters have strong passions for Motor Sports (65% more than the average Australian) and Winter Sports (48% more than the average Australian) — two sports and activities St. Kilda supporters are well down on.

Despite being supporters of a tough team sport — Australian Football — Geelong supporters are a large 74% less likely to participate in Combative Sports than the average Australian. Geelong supporters are also less interested in taking to the skies, being 32% less likely than the average Australian to have participated in Flying (Pilot license).

Roy Morgan Research’s latest AFL Supporter Release (June 2009) shows that overall Geelong supporters (488,000) clearly outnumber St. Kilda supporters (311,000). See all the figures for each AFL team here.

Norman Morris, Industry Communications Director at Roy Morgan Research, says:

“Roy Morgan Research figures reveal that two different sets of supporters will be cheering on their favourite team in this Saturday’s AFL Grand Final.

“Close analysis of the extensive research available to Roy Morgan across many different categories shows that although all supporters of the two competing football teams obviously enjoy their Aussie Rules — their other sporting pursuits differ greatly from each other.

“Although supporters of the two teams have clearly divergent participation rates for Motor Sports in particular, it is worth noting that both Geelong and St. Kilda supporters have above average participation rates for Horse Riding.

“Perhaps after all is said and done after the battle this Saturday, supporters of St. Kilda and Geelong could set aside their differences at the upcoming Victorian Spring Racing Carnival?”

These are the latest findings from the Roy Morgan Sports Monitor, part of Roy Morgan Single Source, a nationwide survey of 20, 087 people aged 14 years and over from July 2008 to June 2009.
