Consumer Confidence Press Release
This weekly ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is based on 1,006 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over last weekend December 5/6, 2015.
ANZ-Roy Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence bounced 3.1% this week to 116.3. Confidence has now retraced most of the falls seen in the last three weeks, and levels are now back well above their long run average (+3.2%). The strength was seen across all sub-indices.
ANZ Co-head of Australian Economics Felicity Emmett commented:
- Consumers’ views towards their current finances bounced sharply (5.4%), following four weeks of flat to negative growth. Consumers’ views towards their future finances also rose (3.0%).
- Confidence in the economic outlook also bounced, retracing the falls seen last week. The subindex on ‘economic conditions in the next 5 years’ rose 4.0%, partly retracing the falls (of 7.3%) seen over the previous three weeks. The subindex on ‘economic conditions in the next 12 months’ rose 3.3%, adding to the overall increase in confidence.
- The sub-index on ‘time to buy a major household item’ was up 0.5%, adding to the overall increase in confidence.
“Signs of a downward trend in ANZ-Roy Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence over the past few weeks have been reversed with this week’s bounce. More positive newsflow around the economy may have lifted overall confidence with both retail trade and the official numbers on GDP growth showing the Australian economy growing at a better-than-expected rate.
"It is also possible that consumers are also starting to feel more optimistic as we enter the Christmas season. While it is now above its long run average (3.2%), it will be important for confidence to remain elevated to help support consumer spending in the crucial Christmas shopping period.”
