Contribute to the future of the digital technology, by participating in our ground-breaking study into how Australians use the technology. This section contains everything you need to know about the Roy Morgan Community App, that makes this study possible.

The Roy Morgan Community App is an application that helps us collect information on online behaviour from thousands of anonymous users like you. This information will be used to help create a more relevant, interesting and entertaining online experience for all Australians.

It has been developed on the RealityMine Ltd technology platform. The purpose of the Roy Morgan Community App is to gain a better understanding of trends and patterns affecting web usage in Australia. Just as television ratings identify which programs attract the most viewers, the data collected by the Roy Morgan Community App allows us to determine the popularity and importance of different websites and applications.

We will never collect or store important personal details such as passwords, PINs or other log-in details, credit cards or financial transactions. Your information will NOT be shared with anyone in an identifiable form.

The Roy Morgan Research Community App can be easily uninstalled at any time.

Nothing. Roy Morgan Community App helps us to observe your online use with minimal disruption to you and it’s completely safe, secure and anonymous. The only thing you need to do, after installing the app, is ensure the app remains open and to browse the web as you usually do.

Yes. For every full calendar month we receive data from your devices you will receive an E-Gift Card.

If you are an Oz Panel member, points will be added your Oz Panel account for each month of participation rather than an E-Gift card.

All you need to do is to install Roy Morgan Community App on the devices you are using for online browsing and keep the App running.

The E-Gift Card can be spent at retailers like JB HI-FI, Myer, Target, Woolworths, Coles, Apple App Store & iTunes, BCF, Bunnings, Caltex, David Jones, EB Games, eBay, Google Play, Harris Scarfe, Kmart, Mighty Ape, Priceline, Rebel, Supercheap Auto, Target, and many more.

If you are an OzPanel member you can redeem your points at a 1 point to $1 conversion for a wide range of E-gift cards.

If you would prefer to receive physical Coles/Myer Gift Cards each month please let us know and we can arrange to have those sent instead.

Yes, it’s possible. If you receive an E-Gift Card and would prefer to receive physical Coles/Myer Gift Cards each month, please let us know by sending email to research-community@roymorgan.com and we can arrange to have those sent instead.

Rewards are granted for every full month of data we receive from you via the Roy Morgan Community App.

By the middle of each month, you should have received an email from us confirming that we’ve received your data for the previous calendar month or your gift card should have arrived at your address.

Participation is ongoing and we encourage you to install the Roy Morgan Community App on all the devices you use to access the web. However, participation is optional and you may stop participating at any time. Simply follow our uninstallation guide and send us an email to opt out.

The Roy Morgan Community App may collect the following types of information about you:

1. Online browsing: This includes the sites you visit and apps you use, including news sites/apps or social networks, and your interactions with them.

2. Online activities: This includes the search terms you enter and the results of such searches, the videos you view, the products you shop for online, information you enter into forms, the materials you download or upload, the advertisements you see, cookies on websites you visit, information and content on sites or apps that you visit or use and with which you interact and may include personal, financial and health information (subject to the process described below in the section entitled “Protecting Personal & Sensitive Information”).

3. System information: This includes information about the device and browser that you are running on, including the IP address and phone number of the device, how the Application is operating, and which other applications are installed or running.

4. Mobile Usage Information, which refers to information about your use of your mobile device which we are able to collect if you have downloaded and installed one of our Applications/VPN profiles on your device. Please note this information is collected and transmitted to us ‘in the background’ and does not require any further activation on your part. We call this ‘passive tracking’, and may include the following types of information:

Information about your internet browsing habits – how much time you spend browsing the web on your mobile device or computer, the sites you visit or apps you use, and the terms of any search you carry out; and

Information about your usage of other apps and features (such as the camera, though we do not collect any photos) on your mobile device, including the identity of the apps and features, when you downloaded them, how often you use them and for how long.

5. Information we can deduce from combining the above information – e.g., what apps you were using just before you searched for particular information using your mobile device’s web browser.

6. Operating system capabilities to view to contents of your applications such as Accessibility services.

7. The AdvertiserID/IDFA of your device.

The above list is not a comprehensive list of every single data element.

If you wish at any stage to turn off this passive location tracking, you will need to uninstall the Application, by following all of the defined steps from the instructions set out in ‘How to de-install Roy Morgan Community App’ section.

Data gathered through the Roy Morgan Community App helps to understand how Australians are using different websites or apps, what content they find interesting, what role the web plays in their daily life and how the consumption of online media is changing in Australia over the time.

At Roy Morgan Research, we’ve long believed that successful market research relies on the goodwill of the public. Protecting the privacy of the people who make our business possible is one way of ensuring ongoing goodwill and is therefore vital to our ongoing business success.

The Federal Privacy Act 1988, and the Amendment of 2000, that defines a set of National Privacy Principles (NPPs) and the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016 that governs the way organisations collect, use, protect and disclose personal information.

As mentioned earlier, we’ll never collect or store your personal details, such as passwords, PINs or other log-ins, credit cards or financial transactions. Your information will NOT be shared with anyone in an identifiable form.

Your personal data is stored in secure databases on Australian servers whereas your usage data is store separately on international servers, to which only authorised employees of Roy Morgan Research have access. We only ever use your personal details when we need to contact you for research or payment purposes. Your usage data is used in an aggregated, anonymous form for data analysis.

You can prompt the installation of the Community application using the link provided in your invitation email. If you cannot find this link or email then you can request the link via research-community@roymorgan.com

Your invitation email will also include links to installation guides for Windows devices, Apple desktops/laptops (OSX), Android tablets/smartphones, and Apple iPad/iPhones (iOS).

These are very detailed and include handy screenshots to assist you however there are also some brief installation steps below.

For Windows Devices

Click the link we sent you in the email, this will initiate a download of the necessary installation (.exe) file through your browser. You will need to run this file to install the Windows desktop app.

Run (or ‘Run as administrator’ if you have the option) the ‘13-windowsDesktop…’ .exe file.

Accept the prompts asking you to allow the program to make changes to your computer to allow installation to complete.

If you are using Chrome, an extension will be installed alongside the app. Please note that if you have the Chrome browser opened, you will receive the message to exit Google Chrome. Please click ‘OK’ to proceed. A blue icon in the top bar will confirm that the extension is installed and running.

Enter your email address to which you have received the installation link from us when prompted.

Accept the Terms & Conditions and the Privacy Policy.

You will get a screen with a green tick confirming the registration is complete.

For Mac Computer

Click the link we sent you in the email, this will initiate a download of the necessary installation file.

Once the application has been downloaded you will need to drag the Roy Morgan icon into your applications folder.

Find the Community App in your app tray and open it.

Enter the email address the installation link was sent to.

Accept the Terms & Conditions and the Privacy Policy.

You will get the screen showing the registration is complete.

If you are using Chrome, an extension will be installed alongside the app. Please note that if you have the Chrome browser opened, you will receive the message to exit Google Chrome. Please click ‘OK’ to proceed. A blue icon in the top bar will confirm that the extension is installed and running.

For Android (mobiles and tablets)

To install our Roy Morgan Community Application simply follow these steps:

Open email we sent you with the link on your phone or tablet (if you use both devices please repeat the procedure on each device separately)

Click on the link and click OK to accept the standard Android alert. It is completely safe to install the application from the link provided by us.

You will be directed to the app store. Click install and accept the access request.

When app is installed open it either directly from the app store or from the home-screen.

When you open the app for the first time it will start configuring. Please accept the Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy and accept to continue.

Once the configuration is completed please click ‘Continue’.

You will get the screen showing the registration is complete. Please click ‘Continue’ and then ‘Enable usage access’. Toggle the AnalyzeMe tab in order to enable access.

After installing the app you will notice a ‘Certificate is available’ notification. Click on it and select ‘OK’.

You will be asked for permission to set up the VPN – please click ‘OK’.

For iOS (iPhone and iPad)

To install our Roy Morgan Community Application simply follow these steps:

Open email/text we sent you with the link on your phone or tablet (if you use both devices please repeat the procedure on each device separately).

Click the link and choose ‘Install’. You may see blank screen when the App is being downloaded.

Go to your home screen and wait until the Roy Morgan Community App icon finishes downloading. It will take about 2 minutes.

Login to the app using the email address you’ve got your invitation to

After accepting Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions, you will be prompted to follow the steps of the Setup Guide.

You will be prompted to install the VPN – just follow the steps mentioned in the App.

You will be prompted to download and install SSL Certificate – Go to ‘Settings’ -> ‘ General’ and scroll down to ‘Profile’ and click on it. You will see Profile “RealityMeterCA”, then click on ‘Install’ in the right top corner of the screen.

Return to your home screen and open the Roy Morgan Community App. You will be prompted to Trust SSL Certificate – Go to ‘Settings’ -> General ->About -> Certificate Trust Settings. Enable “RealityMeterCA” certificate.

Roy Morgan Community App has been installed.

If you use more than one device to access the web, please open the email we sent you with the installation link and install the Roy Morgan Community App on each of the devices separately.

If you cannot find the email with the link please email us at research-community@roymorgan.com and we will resend it to you.

As long as your phone is connected to Wi-Fi every day, then you can still participate. When you are connected to Wi-Fi, to make sure we know you are still participating, press the upload button on the status screens so that all surveys and other data will be uploaded to us.

The application will send a tiny amount of data (less than 3 KB at a time) over the web each day, so you will not notice an impact on your data allowance. While this is only a small amount of data, we recommend that you have a data plan on your phone; otherwise, your network provider will charge you.

No, you should do whatever you normally do with your phone, tablet or computer. Please do not change anything.

Changing your computer, mobile phone or tablet means your participation in the project will pause, we stop receiving your data making you ineligible for your rewards.

But you can return to the program at any time.

Simply contact us at research-community@roymorgan.com and we’ll provide you with the link allowing you to install the Roy Morgan Community App on your new device.

Absolutely not! Roy Morgan will not sell your personal information to other companies or give them permission to send marketing material to you. We will notify you if we haven’t received data from you for a week or more so you don’t miss out on the monthly incentive. From time to time if we have your consent we may contact you with survey invitations and reminders.

Like all applications, the Roy Morgan Community app will have some impact on the battery in your phone and, in some cases, especially if you are a heavy phone user, you may need to charge your phone during the day to take part in the program.
